Keeping the maintenance up on your house is essential if you decide to reduce your homeowner’s insurance policy as you will be responsible for your guests’ health and safety. You make sure your valuables are locked up safely, and you buy security systems, stronger doors, locks, and windows to protect your home from theft. To avoid any of your guests getting bitten you may even choose a cat as your pet instead of a dog.

Without homeowner’s insurance winter can be a difficult time as damage is likely to occur to your home. The weather during winter can cause damage to your home which can present a safety risk to the people living in it and visiting so you need to prepare for the colder season.

Start at the top of your house when you make preparations for the colder months. Make sure your gutters are clean, and keep them clean by purchasing gutter guards – those nifty little add-ons that prevent anything like leaves and branches from clogging up your gutters. Then take a look at the walk way and steps that lead to your home. You should secure anything outside your home that is loose like handrails, steps and stones as well as filling in any cracks or holes that could be covered in snow and cause injury if someone were to step in them by accident. Think about installing a handrail if you do not have one already as it can prevent slips and falls when the area outside of your home becomes icy. Look at the areas of wall on your home around the doors and windows. If there is damage or holes here fill them in.

Next move into your home. Keep your heating system in working order with an insulating jacket, top up on your thermal insulation in the roof and walls and make sure no drafts are entering your rooms through windows or doors.
